Who it is for

Graduate chemists, junior plant engineers, and career changers with a STEM foundation who need structured process design practice.

What you leave with

A portfolio-ready design package for a continuous process unit, including balances, P&ID sketches, and a safety review memo.

Who teaches

Led by Cedarfield faculty with industrial mentoring from visiting plant engineers.

Preparation

Bring a scientific calculator and comfort with algebra. Optional pre-course evening on spreadsheets for balances is offered free to enrolled learners.

What is included

  • Twice-weekly studio sessions with a chartered process engineer
  • Access to the teaching laboratory for heat-transfer and fluid-flow experiments
  • Template packs for material balances and equipment data sheets
  • Final design critique with written feedback

What is not included

  • Commercial process simulation software licences beyond campus hours
  • Travel and accommodation
  • Formal university credit or degree award

Constraints

Maximum 16 places per intake. Laboratory sessions require closed-toe footwear and provided PPE.

How the twelve weeks unfold

Stage 1

Application review and preparatory reading list

Stage 2

Foundations block: balances, thermodynamics refresh, and unit operations

Stage 3

Design studio: choose a product stream and build the flowsheet

Stage 4

Laboratory corroboration of key transfer rates

Stage 5

Safety and operability review

Stage 6

Final presentation and certificate of completion
